Voice of the Cicadas is based on a seventeenth century haiku by the Edo period poet, Matsuo Bashō, who juxtaposes images of the still and quiet with the shrill cries of cicadas. The music captures the poem’s imagery through the exploration of subtle shifts in timbre and the contrasting moments between flowing and rhythmic textures.
閑さや岩にしみ入る蝉の声
Such stillness –
The cries of the cicadas
Sink into the rocks
