The tale of Shuten-Dōji is a Japanese legend based on the scrolls of Ōeyama and Ibukiyama composed during the Nanbokucho period (1336-1392) and Edo period (1624-1644) respectively. Both texts are set during the reign of Ichijo Tennō (990-95) and take place in the capital city of Heian-kyo where young men and women have been disappearing. After a yin-yang master, known as an onmyoji, finds out through divination that the demon Shuten-Dōji is responsible for the disappearances, the court summons the samurai Minamoto Raikō to find and kill the demon.
