Saxophone and French horn duet, Dr. Jennifer Blackwell and Brian KM, will be performing three works by University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Graduate students Jason Tse, Smee Wong, and James Finamore at The Exchange presented by the East West Center. These works are a part of a larger project inspired by the street art of Kaka’ako created at the annual PowWow mural art festival. Artists from around the world come to the festival to create murals that inspire community building and cultural sharing. While these pieces were not composed in collaboration with the street artists, they do create a dialogue between the cultural background and musical identity of the composers and that of the artists.
This week’s topic at The Exchange is dedicated to Intercultural Collaboration. The process of sharing and exchanging knowledge, practices, and information between cultures opens our eyes to different points of view and allows us to incorporate elements of different cultures into our own daily lives. This process also brings about new ideas and perspectives making us more creative, more tolerant of other cultures, and helps us connect with others in deeper, meaningful ways.
